Zagreb participatory budgeting project
Overview
The City of Zagreb has launched the third edition of its participatory budgeting project, titled ‘Daj prijedlog za novi kvart’ (Give a proposal for a new neighborhood). For this cycle, the city allocated over 1.7 million euros to fund citizen-led initiatives, with approximately 550 proposals submitted for improvements such as playground renovations and park upgrades. The project involves 13 of the city’s 17 districts.
While Mayor Tomislav Tomašević noted that the number of proposals has doubled compared to the previous year, the project has faced criticism from city council members and leaders in four non-participating districts: Donja Dubrava, Gornja Dubrava, Brezovica, and Sesvete. Critics Dina Dogan and Vedran Jerković allege that the project is funded by diverting money from existing district budgets rather than using additional municipal funds. District leaders from the non-participating areas have called for the city to secure new, dedicated funds to support the initiative.
