Zambian industrial and pharmaceutical development

Overview

Zambia has initiated several large scale industrial projects aimed at national development and health security. In late October 2026, President Hakainde Hichilema officiated the groundbreaking for a US$1.6 billion urea plant expansion by United Capital Fertilizer in Lusaka West. During the ceremony, the President warned that he would be “ruthless” against civil servants who delay government projects or investments.

Following this, the government announced plans to begin construction of Africa’s first oral cholera vaccine manufacturing plant at the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone. Developed through a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese firm International Medical Technology, the facility aims to produce 20 million doses annually to support the African Union’s goal of eliminating cholera by 2030. This initiative comes as the country manages a cholera outbreak that has resulted in 1,622 cases and 30 deaths, prompting the government to release K13 million for emergency water supplies.
