Zambian security operation and death of Mutotwe Kafwaya

Overview

Following a security operation at the residence of presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Kabulonga on August 14, 2026, former Minister of Transport and Communications Mutotwe Kafwaya was fatally wounded. The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) called for an independent and transparent investigation into the shooting, citing concerns over the use of lethal force and inconsistencies in government statements.

As the situation progressed, the family of the deceased declined an offer of state funeral honours from the government. The family also suspended all burial arrangements and church services after reporting that Kafwaya’s remains were returned without clothing, shoes, or a mobile phone. Authorities allegedly claimed these items were destroyed because they were “heavily soaked in blood.” The family expressed concern that the condition of the remains would prevent traditional leadership in the Lunte constituency from accepting them.
