Zara children's costume controversy
Overview
The fashion retailer Zara removed a children’s Halloween costume from its website following public outcry. The ‘Halloween Groom Costume for Kids’ featured blue and grey stripes and ‘fake sewn scars’ on the jacket and shorts.
Social media users criticized the design, noting that the stripes and certain patterns resembled the uniforms worn by Jewish prisoners in Nazi concentration camps. Some users also pointed out that the sharp shapes on the garment evoked imagery of barbed wire. Additionally, details such as patches on the sleeves were noted to resemble prisoner identification numbers. The item, which was being sold in England for £39.99, was removed from the online store after criticism gained momentum following reports by journalists, including Dov Gil-Har, who described the product as a ‘nightmarish idea’.
In response to the backlash, Zara Home stated that it ‘regrets any misunderstanding’ caused by the product and confirmed the costume is no longer available in stores or online. The company did not provide an explanation as to why the design passed internal quality controls.
This incident follows a history of similar controversies for the retailer regarding products associated with National Socialism, including a 2014 recall of a striped shirt featuring a yellow six-pointed star and a 2007 incident involving bags decorated with swastikas.
