Zcash Community Grants funding proposal controversy

Overview

The Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) committee proposed a plan to reallocate approximately $124 million in current and future funding toward mining rewards. This plan involved moving roughly 36,200 ZEC from the existing treasury into the Network Sustainability Mechanism to pay miners as block subsidies decline, while also tapering future grant distributions until the 2032 halving event.

The proposal drew significant criticism from industry leaders and community members. Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius, argued the plan was “not nearly enough” and that decision-making must be accountable to ZEC holders, while Tyler Winklevoss of Gemini questioned the committee’s oversight. Other community members suggested alternative approaches, such as moving 50,000 ZEC to the Network Sustainability Mechanism and creating a separate fund for development and legal defense.

Following this backlash, the ZCG committee withdrew the proposal. Critics had argued the plan would extend the committee’s funding duration by four years rather than reducing it. While the original plan was abandoned, competing proposals, including an alternative supported by Zcash co-founders Sean Bowe and Zooko Wilcox, remain under discussion.
