Zillow Group has faced multiple legal challenges regarding antitrust allegations and real estate listing access.

In August 2026, Zillow and Redfin reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and several state attorneys general to resolve claims concerning the online apartment rental market. The settlement addressed a February 2025 agreement where Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to exit the multifamily rental advertising market. As part of the resolution, Redfin must dismantle provisions preventing it from competing and rebuild its own apartment advertising business, while the companies pay $2 million to a coalition of states.

Separately, in September 2026, a U.S. District Judge in Chicago dissolved an order that had required Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED) to maintain Zillow’s access to Chicagoland real estate listings. The ruling followed Zillow’s allegation of an illegal group boycott between MRED and Compass Inc. The judge ruled that Zillow failed to provide sufficient evidence for the claim. Zillow described the decision as “a step back for Chicago home buyers and sellers” and indicated it would pursue the case through arbitration.
