AI and big data emerge as top global risks for experts
According to the thirteenth edition of the Future Risks Report, developed by AXA Group in partnership with Ipsos, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data have overtaken climate change as the leading emerging risk for experts both in Mexico and globally. This shift marks the first time AI has displaced climate change from the top position held for the previous five years.
In Mexico, 73 percent of experts and 83 percent of the general population report feeling vulnerable to AI-related risks. Experts specifically highlighted the ‘black box’ effect—the lack of transparency in how AI systems make decisions—as a primary concern. While AI ranks tenth in the general population's risk ranking, half of the public views it as a rapidly advancing threat.
Climate change remains the top concern for the Mexican population for the fifth consecutive year and is ranked second among experts. Additionally, health concerns are significant; when combining mental health, chronic diseases, pandemics, and infectious diseases, health issues represent two of the three primary risks identified by Mexicans.
The report also identifies a gap in preparedness. While 94 percent of experts and 88 percent of the population believe many risks could be partially mitigated through preventive measures, only 36 percent of the general population feels prepared to face a large-scale crisis, such as a natural disaster or pandemic.
