The African Development Bank’s climate chief, Anthony Nyong, warned that the developing “super El Niño” could inflict an economic loss of between $10 billion and $20 billion across African nations. The bank estimates that the shock would cut gross domestic product in the hardest‑hit countries by roughly 1 % to 2 % on average. In addition to the GDP hit, the event is expected to trigger mass migration from the most affected regions, strain government finances and banking sectors, and jeopardise food and water security. AfDB figures show African farmers are already losing about $330 million in income this year, while fisheries could see productivity fall 1 %–4 % because of warmer seas and stronger storms. The bank says Africa may need up to $100 billion in the next 12 months for climate‑adaptation and El Niño‑related needs.
