Netherlands imposes nationwide bird flu restrictions

State Secretary Silvio Erkens of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature has implemented a nationwide housing and shielding mandate following three recent bird flu outbreaks in the Netherlands. The measures aim to reduce the risk of infection as migratory bird patterns increase the potential for virus spread.

The mandate requires all commercial poultry to be housed indoors. For non-commercial or hobbyist keepers of risk-prone birds, a shielding requirement is in effect to prevent contact with wild birds. Additionally, a total ban on exhibiting risk-prone birds has been reinstated, and visitor access to poultry facilities is strictly limited to essential personnel such as veterinarians and inspectors.

Recent outbreaks were confirmed in Middelie (North Holland) and the Groningen villages of Lutjegast and Grootegast. In Grootegast, approximately 51,000 laying hens were culled. A 10-kilometer restriction zone has been established around the affected sites, including a transport ban on birds, eggs, manure, and bedding within this radius. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is conducting tracing investigations and screening nearby farms.
