Avian influenza outbreaks in Europe

Overview

Recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) have triggered significant containment measures in England, the Netherlands, and Germany.

In Northumberland, England, a commercial free-range egg farm near Belford reported a rapid increase in bird deaths, leading to the culling of approximately 32,000 laying hens. The Animal and Plant Health Agency established a 3-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the site. While the farmer reported losses exceeding £100,000, health agencies stated the human health risk remains “very low”.

In the Netherlands, authorities implemented a nationwide mandate for poultry confinement and shielding following outbreaks in Middelie, Lutjegast, and Grootegast. In Grootegast, roughly 51,000 laying hens were culled. The Dutch government has enforced a 10-kilometre restriction zone involving transport bans on poultry, eggs, and manure. State Secretary for Agriculture Silvio Erkens is also discussing potential mandatory vaccinations for laying hens. Under the current mandate, all commercial poultry must be housed indoors, while non-commercial or hobbyist keepers are required to use shielding to prevent contact with wild birds. A total ban on exhibiting risk-prone birds has been reinstated, and visitor access to poultry facilities is strictly limited to essential personnel.

In Germany, the state of Schleswig-Holstein reinstated a general biosecurity order on October 27, 2026, following three confirmed H5N1 outbreaks in the districts of Nordfriesland, Segeberg, and Schleswig-Flensburg. Agriculture Minister Cornelia Schmachtenberg warned of a potentially severe outbreak in the coming weeks. The German order requires keepers to disinfect footwear and hands before entering poultry houses and prohibits the movement of birds through markets or fairs.
