Bolotana identified as a new Blue Zone due to extreme longevity
The village of Bolotana in Sardinia has been identified as a new ‘Blue Zone’ by longevity researcher Dan Buettner. The community, which has approximately 2,262 inhabitants, currently hosts ten centenarians, a proportion roughly ten times higher than the Sardinian average.
Research published in Frontiers in Aging suggests that the town's longevity is closely linked to traditional dietary habits. The diet is approximately 90% plant-based, consisting primarily of beans, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, wheat, and olive oil, with meat consumed only occasionally. Many residents produce their own food by cultivating land and raising sheep for cheese.
Notably, women in Bolotana who reach the age of 70 have approximately three times the probability of reaching 100 compared to women of the same age in North America. The community has historically been distinguished by a lack of fast food and ultra-processed foods.
