Identification of new Blue Zones
Overview
Researchers and longevity experts are identifying new ‘Blue Zones’—geographic areas with high concentrations of long-lived individuals.
In Catalonia, researcher Manel Esteller has proposed that the area between Olot and Vic may function as a Blue Zone. This hypothesis is based on the life of supercentenarian Maria Branyas and suggests the region shares Mediterranean longevity factors such as favorable climate, strong social connections, and a diet rich in vegetables, fish, and fermented products.
In Sardinia, the village of Bolotana has been identified as a new Blue Zone by researcher Dan Buettner. The community contains a proportion of centenarians roughly ten times higher than the Sardinian average. Studies indicate this longevity is linked to a 90% plant-based diet and a historical lack of ultra-processed foods.
