Bulgaria tourism sector faces mixed outlook amid Black Sea tensions
Bulgaria's tourism sector is facing conflicting signals regarding its stability and future growth. Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov reports that interest from key European markets, specifically Germany and Poland, remains steady. According to the Minister, current tensions in the Black Sea region have not negatively impacted the perception of Bulgaria as a safe destination, with some reservations showing better development compared to the same period last year.
However, former Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova has warned of growing concerns within the industry. She noted that some tour operators and hoteliers are already experiencing delays and direct cancellations of reservations following attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. Angelkova highlighted that geopolitical conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East are driving up fuel and insurance costs, creating a sense of insecurity.
To mitigate these risks, Angelkova has called for an urgent inter-agency coordination mechanism to reassure international partners of Bulgaria's safety. She also suggested working with the European Commission to address the economic consequences of rising insurance premiums. While European tourism is projected to grow by approximately 3% in 2026, the Bulgarian industry continues to struggle with structural issues such as labor shortages and inconsistent transport policies.
