DRC Ebola outbreak: MSF staff member evacuated to Netherlands

An MSF staff member working on the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus. The individual is being evacuated to the Netherlands under strict medical protocols to receive specialized care, potentially at the Leiden University Medical Center.

This infection occurs during the largest Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC, which has seen over 8,000 confirmed cases and 4,000 deaths since May. MSF is currently supporting response efforts across the Ituri, North Kivu, Tshopo, and Haut-Uélé provinces.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) noted that while this is the fourth imported case related to the current outbreak, the risk to the general European population remains very low. MSF is also conducting the BRAVO study to evaluate the potential efficacy of the ERVEBO vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus among frontline workers, though they emphasize that vaccination does not replace standard infection prevention measures.
