Italian wine industry faces climate adaptation and funding calls
The Italian wine industry is facing significant operational and structural shifts. Producers are navigating the complexities of the 2026 harvest, where rising temperatures and water scarcity are forcing changes in grape harvesting schedules, canopy management, and vineyard maintenance to prevent disease and sun damage.
In response to these environmental and economic pressures, Italian nursery associations, including MIVA and the Associazione Vivaisti Viticoli Friuli Venezia Giulia, are calling for a reallocation of OCM wine funds. Rather than using funds to incentivize the removal of vines, they argue the resources should support the restructuring and reconversion of vineyards. This would allow for the introduction of varieties, clones, and rootstocks better adapted to climate change and evolving market demands.
Additionally, the Federazione italiana vignaioli indipendenti (Fivi) is promoting the ‘Essere Vignaioli’ event from October 19 to 25. This nationwide initiative involves tastings and meetings across Italy to showcase independent wine producers and prepare for the upcoming Independent Winegrowers Market in November.
