Chicago Cubs miss playoff clinch after loss to Miami Marlins

The Chicago Cubs failed to clinch a National League Wild Card berth following a loss to the Miami Marlins. In a game that extended to 12 innings, the Marlins secured an 8-2 victory, fueled by a six-run outburst in the final frame.

Cubs starter Shota Imanaga provided a solid performance, allowing one run over five innings with seven strikeouts. However, the Cubs' bullpen struggled late, and the offense failed to capitalize on key opportunities, going 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Pete Crow-Armstrong remained one steal away from joining the ‘40-40’ club, finishing the game with 39 stolen bases.

In addition to the loss, Cubs pitcher Kevin Gausman expressed concerns regarding a left shoulder injury sustained while making a defensive play in the sixth inning. The Cubs' postseason hopes now depend on upcoming results, as they remain in a tight race with the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies for Wild Card positioning.
