Chicago MLB teams clinch postseason berths

Overview

The Chicago Cubs have officially clinched a National League Wild Card postseason berth following a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins. This win marks the second consecutive year the team has reached the playoffs. During the game, Pete Crow-Armstrong made history as the seventh player in MLB history to join the ‘40-40’ club, recording his 40th home run and 40th stolen base of the season. Post-game celebrations at Wrigley Field featured pitcher Shota Imanaga performing a “self-service” champagne fight. Describing the act as “Japanese misogi,” Imanaga poured beer over himself, a gesture that amused teammates. The celebrations also marked the final broadcast for Marquee Sports Network reporter Taylor McGregor before her transition to a full-time role at ESPN. In a rare occurrence for the city, the Chicago White Sox also clinched a postseason berth on the same day following a 9-1 win against the Kansas City Royals. This marks the first time both Chicago franchises have secured postseason appearances on the same day since 2008, completing a historic turnaround for the White Sox following three consecutive seasons of 100 losses. The White Sox remain in contention for the AL Central division title against the Cleveland Guardians, who also secured their third consecutive postseason berth with a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox, driven by an Angel Martínez home run and relief pitching from Joey Cantillo. However, the Red Sox face uncertainty regarding the availability of first baseman Willson Contreras due to a hand injury. Despite the successful clinch, teams face logistical hurdles. Due to an approaching nor’easter in the New England region, MLB has rescheduled games for the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Cubs manager Craig Counsell has criticized the sudden schedule changes, noting they complicate pitching rotations leading into the Wild Card round.
