DHA deficiency affects 8 in 10 Indonesian children

Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition indicates that approximately 8 out of 10 Indonesian children aged 4 to 12 have EPA and DHA intake levels below the minimum recommended by the FAO and WHO. This nutritional gap is linked to changing consumption patterns as children enter primary school age (7–12 years), a critical period for brain development.

Pediatric specialist dr. Shyrien Amalina MSc, SpA noted that as children reach school age, they often shift their preference from milk to flavored beverages like chocolate drinks, tea, or soft drinks. This shift can lead to a reduction in DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid essential for the development and function of the nervous system, including memory, concentration, and learning abilities.

In response to these nutritional challenges, PT Mayora Indah Tbk has introduced Champion, a chocolate malt drink enriched with DHA, aimed at providing a flavor profile children prefer while maintaining necessary brain-supporting nutrients.
