Düsseldorf trial begins for attempted murder of drug lord's nephew

A trial has commenced in Düsseldorf regarding a shooting targeting the nephew of notorious drug lord Hüseyin B., often referred to as the ‘Pablo Escobar of Europe’. The proceedings are being held under high security within a high-security wing of the Higher Regional Court, a facility typically reserved for terrorism trials.

Prosecutors allege that on December 30, 2025, three individuals were involved in an attack where ten shots were fired at a taxi passenger on a main road. The 40-year-old victim was struck by seven bullets but survived following emergency surgery. Two defendants, a 39-year-old Syrian and a 22-year-old Turk, face charges of attempted murder, while a third defendant is charged with aiding and abetting.

The victim had recently participated in a demonstration at the Dutch consulate in Düsseldorf to demand the release of his uncle, who has been imprisoned in the Netherlands for approximately 28 years. During the investigation, authorities seized an assault rifle and another firearm from the residence of the 22-year-old suspect.
