Dutch Central Bank moves 86 tonnes of gold to London
The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) has relocated 86 metric tonnes of its gold reserves from North America to London. The operation, conducted between March and August 2026, involved moving gold from vaults in New York and Ottawa to the United Kingdom.
DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen stated the move was a crisis preparedness measure intended to enhance the liquidity and tradability of the reserves amid increasing global geopolitical unrest. London was selected due to its status as a primary global hub for gold trading, offering easier access to liquidity compared to holdings in New York or Ottawa.
The relocation was executed through a combination of physical transport and financial transactions. Over 27 tonnes of gold were physically moved from North America to the DNB's secure facility in Zeist, Netherlands, and subsequently to London. The remaining portion of the 86-tonne transfer was completed by selling approximately 59 tonnes of gold in New York and repurchasing an equivalent amount in London.
Following the redistribution, the share of Dutch gold held in London increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. The holdings in New York and Ottawa each decreased to 18.5%. The DNB maintains a total of 612.4 tonnes of gold, valued at approximately €72.2 billion at the end of 2025.
