Netherlands relocation of gold reserves
Overview
Between March and August 2026, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) relocated 86 metric tonnes of gold reserves from North America to London. The assets were moved from New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England through a mix of physical transport and financial transactions involving the sale and repurchase of gold to minimize risks. DNB President Olaf Sleijpen described the relocation as a “crisis preparedness” measure designed to enhance the liquidity and tradability of the reserves amid increasing geopolitical unrest. He noted that while the move aims to strengthen institutional resilience, the bank does not expect to need to use these reserves in a crisis.
London was selected as a primary global hub for gold trading to offer easier access to liquidity. The transfer involved physically moving over 27 tonnes of gold to the DNB’s secure facility in Zeist, Netherlands, before it was sent to London, while the remaining 59 tonnes were transferred via market trades in New York and London. Following the transfer, London holds 32.1% of the Netherlands' total 612.4 tonnes of gold reserves, while holdings in the US and Canada both decreased to 18.5%.
By September 2026, this movement is viewed as part of a broader trend where central banks, including those of France and Germany, are reassessing gold storage locations due to geopolitical instability and concerns regarding the predictability of U.S. foreign policy. As European nations reduce holdings stored in the United States or repatriate assets to domestic vaults, the Bank of England continues to serve as a major global custodian, holding approximately 400,000 bars for various central banks.
