Dutch cities report rise in DUI traffic offences in first half of 2026

Police data analysed by Overstappen.nl shows 268 recorded driving‑under‑influence offences in Tilburg during the first six months of 2026, a slight drop of three compared with the same period in 2025. Nationally, the number of such offences rose 2.2% to 24,132, with May the busiest month (4,290 offences). Rotterdam remained the municipality with the most cases (1,465), followed by The Hague (1,439) and Amsterdam (1,409). In Oosterhout, offences increased to 51 from 44 a year earlier, mirroring the national upward trend. Insurance expert Jean‑Paul Würsten warned that financial consequences can far exceed the fine, as most insurers refuse coverage for accidents caused while intoxicated, leaving drivers liable for tens of thousands of euros in damages.
