Netherlands DUI offences increase 2026

In the first half of 2026 Dutch police recorded 24,132 driving‑under‑influence offences, a 2.2 % rise over the same period in 2025. May was the busiest month with 4,290 incidents. Rotterdam led with 1,465 cases, followed by The Hague (1,439) and Amsterdam (1,409). While most cities saw modest increases, Utrecht experienced a sharp 25.1 % decline to 404 offences, and some smaller municipalities showed mixed changes – e.g., Helmond fell by 17 cases, whereas nearby Someren rose to 34. Insurance specialist Jean‑Paul Würsten warned that the financial liability for intoxicated drivers can vastly exceed statutory fines.

Two days later, analysis by Overstappen.nl confirmed the national upward trend, noting 24,132 offences overall and again highlighting Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam as the top locations. Tilburg showed a slight drop of three cases, while Oosterhout increased from 44 to 51 offences, mirroring the broader rise. The report reiterated Würsten’s warning about insurers often refusing coverage for intoxicated‑driving accidents, leaving drivers exposed to substantial damages.
