Dutch Defence Helicopter Exercise 'Centaur Hammer' in NE Netherlands
The Dutch Defence Helicopter Command will conduct the low‑fly exercise “Centaur Hammer” in the north‑east of the Netherlands. Four Apache attack helicopters will operate from 09:00 to 16:30 on 17‑20 August and 24‑25 August, flying at grass‑height to practise attacking ground targets and concealment in a heightened‑threat scenario.
The temporary low‑fly zone covers the municipalities of Westerveld, Assen, Het Hogeland and surrounding areas. Organisers aim to avoid densely built‑up, industrial and harbour zones. A Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP) will be established to extend the helicopters’ operational range.
Defence officials advise farmers to keep livestock indoors or use radios in stables to mask the sudden noise, as previous drills have startled young animals. The exercise is intended to minimise disturbance while providing realistic training for helicopter crews.
