Super El Niño threatens significant global weather shifts in 2026-2027

Meteorologists are tracking a potentially historic Super El Niño event, with NOAA reporting a greater than 90% probability that the phenomenon will reach very strong intensity during the 2026-2027 autumn and winter seasons. Data from August 2026 indicates a temperature anomaly of +1.8 degrees Celsius in the Niño 3.4 region of the tropical Pacific. There is a 69% chance that the intensity will surpass all recorded episodes since 1950.

The phenomenon is expected to influence global atmospheric circulation, potentially affecting weather patterns across Europe and North America. While some models suggest warmer winters for much of Europe due to mild western currents, Central Europe may experience high precipitation and snow. In Greece, experts note that while El Niño is a major factor, the specific winter outcome depends on North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and the positioning of high and low-pressure systems.

The Met Office has described the current signal as an unprecedented event, with some models predicting sea temperature deviations of more than three degrees Celsius in key equatorial Pacific zones. The impact of this warming is expected to persist through the spring of 2027.
