El Niño phenomenon triggers global climate alerts and extreme weather

The El Niño phenomenon is intensifying globally, with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirming it is firmly established and expected to reach peak intensity by the end of 2026, potentially lasting until February 2027.

In Ecuador, a red alert is in effect as high waves have already caused destruction to houses, businesses, and coastal landmarks in provinces like Guayas and Manabí. The agricultural sector faces extreme risks, with up to 2 million hectares of crops potentially suffering severe damage from floods or droughts.

Honduras is experiencing a humanitarian crisis due to severe drought in its southern regions and the dry corridor. The government has mobilized over 300 million lempiras to provide food and medicine to thousands of families facing crop failures.

Other nations are also preparing for the impact. Timor-Leste is collaborating with the UNDP to strengthen rural resilience against extreme weather. In Uruguay, authorities have declared an institutional alert to manage projected heavy rainfall, while Argentina anticipates significant moisture levels in its agricultural regions.
