Pacific Ocean Super El Niño on track to become strongest on record

A record-breaking El Niño event is developing in the Pacific Ocean, with scientists warning it may become the strongest ever recorded. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that sea surface temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific have remained at record levels for over two months.

The event is rapidly approaching the 'super El Niño' threshold, defined by temperature anomalies exceeding 2°C. While the Niño 3.4 region recently recorded an anomaly of 1.8°C, the Niño 1+2 region off the coast of Peru has already reached an exceptional 3.3°C anomaly. Projections suggest that temperatures could peak in December at approximately 4.1°C above average, surpassing the record-breaking 2015 event.

This phenomenon is expected to cause significant global weather disruptions. Observed impacts include heat domes, temperature records in Peru, deadly storms in Chile, and destructive typhoons in the western Pacific. In Europe, experts suggest the event could lead to a particularly wet and mild winter, increasing the risk of flooding in regions such as the Rhine and Moselle rivers.
