Electric vehicle fire risks and battery life myths debunked

Recent data and diagnostic tests are debunking common myths regarding electric vehicles (EVs), specifically concerning fire risks and battery longevity.

In the Czech Republic, statistics often misrepresent EV fire rates by including electric scooters and bicycles. When isolating pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the fire rate is approximately 0.67 per 10,000 vehicles, significantly lower than the 3.17 per 10,000 rate for internal combustion engine vehicles and the 5.0 rate for hybrids.

Regarding battery health, studies from Recurrent and Geotab indicate that modern EV batteries degrade much slower than previously feared. On average, EVs retain about 97% of their range after three years and 95% after five years. Annual degradation averages around 2.3%, suggesting batteries could last over 20 years under proper conditions. While extreme heat can accelerate wear by 0.4% annually, technological advancements have reduced battery costs by 93% since 2010 and enabled the repair of specific battery components rather than requiring full replacements.
