European animal shelters face critical overflow of kittens and stray dogs

Animal shelters in the Netherlands are experiencing a seasonal surge in abandoned kittens, with the city of Amersfoort reporting that all 79 foster families are at capacity. The Dutch animal protection organization Dierenbescherming warned that, if the current rate continues, approximately 4,000 kittens could be taken in by 2026, prompting an urgent call for additional volunteers to house the newborns until they are ready for adoption.

In Italy, the environmental group Legambiente highlighted a growing crisis in municipal dog shelters, estimating that more than 14,000 stray dogs could remain unadopted or uncared for by 2025. The report attributes the rise to uncontrolled breeding, inadequate registration, and a lack of basic owner education, urging the parliament to fund essential veterinary services and mandatory training for prospective dog owners.

Both reports underscore the broader challenge across Europe of insufficient resources to manage the influx of animals in shelters and the need for preventive measures and increased foster support.
