European animal shelter overflow and welfare efforts

Overview

In late July 2026, Italian shelters intensified efforts to cope with a summer surge of newborn kittens. The Infermeria Felina in Bizzuno held a public adoption evening on 28 July, showcasing blind kittens rescued after eye injuries from chicken attacks; several had undergone successful eye surgery and five remained available for adoption. Simultaneously, the Trieste shelter announced that all foster slots were filled and appealed for temporary foster homes, food, and adopters for additional newborns.

Across the Netherlands, the city of Amersfoort reported that its 79 foster families were at capacity, and the Dierenbescherming warned that up to 4,000 kittens could be taken in by year‑end without more volunteers. In Italy, environmental group Legambiente warned that more than 14,000 stray dogs risk remaining uncared for, citing uncontrolled breeding and insufficient owner education.

By early August, Italian volunteers led by ENPA emphasized that timely sterilizations are essential to prevent further litters, noting that the speed of the procedure is a critical factor. To support these efforts, a donation campaign was launched using a curated Amazon Wishlist to send supplies directly to the Monza shelter.

Further welfare initiatives emerged in mid-August. The Lilli e il Vagabondo municipal shelter in Parma reported housing 90 dogs and 120 cats while focusing on veterinary care and responsible adoptions. In Varese, the Canile di Varese – LNDC Animal Protection launched the ‘#MusoInVacanza’ fundraising campaign, offering digital postcards for donations to fund the daily care and feeding of shelter animals during the summer months.
