European Commission approves green hydrogen and clean tech aid

The European Commission has approved a €780 million state aid scheme to support green hydrogen production in the Netherlands. The initiative aims to develop up to 400 MW of production capacity, with funding to be distributed through a competitive bidding process by early 2027. Selected projects will receive 10-year variable per-kilogramme subsidies and direct grants covering up to 80 percent of eligible investment costs. The scheme is expected to produce up to 40,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, potentially avoiding 324,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. All hydrogen produced must meet the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) sustainability criteria.

Additionally, EU member states have approved an €84 million state aid package to bolster clean technology manufacturing in Denmark. This funding is part of the bloc’s commitment to green initiatives under the Green Deal framework, intended to support sustainable industries and innovation within the clean tech sector.
