EU state aid for green energy and electricity security
Overview
The European Commission has approved several state aid schemes to support energy transition and security across member states.
In the Netherlands, a €780 million scheme was approved to support green hydrogen production, aiming to develop 400 MW of capacity through competitive bidding. This initiative is designed to produce up to 40,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. Additionally, Denmark received approval for an €84 million package to bolster clean technology manufacturing.
Germany has also received approval for a large-scale electricity capacity mechanism, with estimated state aid ranging from €15.6 billion to €35.2 billion. Set to take full effect in 2031, the mechanism aims to ensure grid reliability during decarbonization by supporting power generation, storage, and demand-side flexibility. To align with climate goals, new gas-fired plants under this scheme must be designed to be ‘hydrogen-ready’ to ensure climate-neutral operation by 2045.
