Aura farming trend moves from social media to physical youth gatherings

The viral social media trend “farmear aura” (aura farming) has transitioned from digital slang to physical gatherings among youth in Latin America and Spain. The term, derived from gaming terminology, refers to the practice of accumulating intangible points of charisma, style, or presence through specific gestures, poses, or attitudes.

In cities like Mexico City, young people have organized in-person competitions in public parks, using memes and internet-driven gestures to win the admiration of onlookers. While some view these gatherings as a positive way for Gen Z and Gen Alpha to reclaim physical social spaces and connect face-to-face outside of screens, others express concern regarding mental health. Experts note that the constant drive for external validation and the pressure to project a perfect image can lead to anxiety and frustration if the desired recognition is not met.

Sociologists and psychologists suggest the phenomenon is a cyclical generational expression, similar to past trends like breakdancing or specific fashion movements. They emphasize the importance of understanding these new social codes rather than stigmatizing them, noting that these activities often serve as a search for identity and community in an increasingly digital world.
