France commemorates Liberation Day and Provence landings

Various regions across France held ceremonies on August 15, 2026, to commemorate the national day of remembrance for the Liberation battles and the landings in Provence.

In Longwy, Mayor Vincent Hamen led a ceremony involving civil and military authorities, flag bearers, and veterans' associations. The event included a wreath-laying ceremony and a reading regarding the Provence landings of August 15, 1944. Hamen emphasized the human cost of the operations and called for the transmission of values of freedom and social progress to younger generations.

In the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, multiple towns organized tributes. In La Croix-Valmer, Alice Rufo, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, attended a ceremony at the landing beach. Other locations, including Cavalaire and Ramatuelle, held military parades, memorial services, and tributes to Allied combatants and those who died for France.
