French Liberation and Provence landing commemorations

Overview

In August 2026, various regions in France organized ceremonies to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Provence landings and other Liberation-era events.

Initial commemorations included planned tributes in La Seyne-sur-Mer at the monument to Marshal Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, as well as the Route Leclerc commemorations in the Argentan region. Following these preparations, ceremonies were held on August 15 across multiple locations. In Longwy, Mayor Vincent Hamen led a ceremony emphasizing the need to transmit values of freedom to younger generations. In the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, tributes included military parades and memorial services attended by government officials, such as Minister Delegate Alice Rufo.

As the commemorations continued through late August, Vallauris Golfe-Juan hosted a parade of period military vehicles, memorial services, and a Liberation Ball, alongside ceramic art exhibitions. In Bourgoin-Jallieu, the anniversary of its August 23, 1944, liberation was marked by a parade of vintage cars, period costumes, a public banquet, and fireworks. In Le Neubourg, the Rétros du Plateau organization arranged a parade of Second World War vehicles, such as Jeeps and GMCs, to honor the arrival of American troops.

In early September, commemorations extended into new regions. In Gourdon, the association Historic organized a historical reenactment of the September 1944 battles, featuring period vehicles and coordinated actions between resistance fighters and soldiers, followed by a formal commemoration and a festive ball. In Besançon, ceremonies scheduled for September 8 include a parade of vintage military vehicles organized with the Doubs Libération US 44 association, era-specific music, and guided tours at the Museum of Resistance and Deportation.
