Frenkie de Jong addresses injury and role at FC Barcelona
Frenkie de Jong has spoken out regarding his recent absence from the FC Barcelona lineup and his desire to reclaim a starting position. The Dutch midfielder, who suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup, addressed the criticism and speculation that arose during his months-long recovery.
De Jong emphasized his identity as a midfielder, stating, “I am a midfielder,” in response to suggestions that he might play in more defensive roles like center-back. He expressed understanding toward fans who were frustrated by his availability for the Dutch national team while being absent from club matches, noting that the injury proved more severe than initially expected.
Despite facing intense competition in the midfield following the arrival of Rodri, De Jong remains ambitious. He noted that while he understands the need for a gradual return to fitness under coach Hansi Flick, he does not want to become accustomed to a role as a substitute. He expressed a long-term goal of playing regularly and contributing to the team's pursuit of major honors, including the Champions League.
