Frenkie de Jong returns to Barcelona action in El Clasico

Frenkie de Jong has made his first competitive appearance for Barcelona following a long-term recovery from a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee. The 29-year-old Netherlands international entered the match against Real Madrid in the 74th minute, playing 16 minutes in an attacking midfield role.

The injury was sustained during the 2026 World Cup while playing for the Netherlands. While the initial diagnosis from the Dutch Federation was reportedly incorrect, Barcelona's medical services confirmed the ligament tear in July, leading to a conservative treatment period.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick utilized De Jong in an unfamiliar position to help improve ball possession and mitigate pressure from Real Madrid. Although De Jong expressed a desire to avoid a prolonged period on the bench, he noted that he understands his return must be gradual as he aims to regain his place in the starting lineup.
