Germany expects heavy holiday traffic and congestion

Major traffic congestion is expected across Germany and neighboring regions during the autumn holiday period from October 16 to 18, 2026. The ADAC and ACE predict traffic volumes approaching summer holiday levels due to the simultaneous start of holidays in eleven German federal states, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony-Anhalt.

Peak congestion is anticipated on Friday afternoons between 14:00 and 19:00 as commuters encounter holiday travelers. Significant delays are expected on major routes heading toward the Alps, coastal regions, and lakes. Specific high-risk motorways include the A1, A3, A5, A7, A8, A9, and A99. Additionally, approximately 1,120 construction sites across Germany are expected to further impede traffic flow.

Travelers heading to the coast may face delays near Bremen and Hamburg, while routes toward Salzburg and the Mediterranean are likely to be heavily congested. In Austria, driving restrictions may be implemented on various detour routes to manage transit traffic. Experts recommend traveling during off-peak hours and planning for extra travel time to avoid the heaviest delays.
