Ghana arrests three suspects linked to $260M cocaine seizure in France
Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested three suspects allegedly linked to the international cocaine trafficking network of Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, known as ‘Bolle Jos’. The arrests follow a massive seizure by French customs in Dunkirk, where approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, valued at roughly $260 million, were discovered concealed within a container of plastic waste originating from Ghana.
The suspects are currently in NACOC custody to assist with investigations into their roles in the operation. This development has intensified political scrutiny in Ghana, with the Minority in Parliament calling for an independent inquiry into the country’s alleged emergence as a narcotics transit hub. Lawmakers cited several high-profile seizures over the past 18 months as evidence of potential gaps in port security and institutional oversight.
In response, NACOC has stated it is working with the Ghana Navy and Marine Police to increase coastal patrols and is engaging French authorities to trace how the shipment left Ghanaian ports. While some security analysts argue that increased arrests and seizures demonstrate stronger enforcement, political figures continue to demand greater accountability to protect Ghana’s international reputation.
