Spain industrial prices surge 18.3% in September driven by energy costs

Spain's industrial producer price index (IPRI) rose by 18.3% year-on-year in September, marking the highest increase in nearly four years. This surge was primarily driven by a 49.8% spike in energy costs, fueled by higher expenses in electricity production, transport, and distribution, as well as petroleum refining.

Other contributing factors included a 7.5% increase in intermediate goods, driven by higher costs in animal feed manufacturing, metalworking, and paper production. While the national industrial inflation rate reached its highest level since November 2022, the energy component remains the dominant driver; excluding energy, industrial prices rose by only 3.6%.

Regional data shows varying impacts, with industrial inflation in Castilla-La Mancha reaching 17.2% due to a 53.6% rise in energy costs. In the Comunitat Valenciana, industrial prices increased by 13.8%. These rising production costs are placing significant pressure on businesses, with 70% of Spanish self-employed workers reporting they have been forced to raise their own prices to cope with inflation.
