Google expands earthquake alerts to the Netherlands
Google has expanded its earthquake alert system to include the Netherlands, making it one of 200 countries now eligible for smartphone notifications. The system provides three levels of warnings: an initial alert to pay attention to nearby vibrations, a second warning to prepare for a strong quake, and a critical third alert requiring immediate action.
In the Netherlands, seismic activity is categorized by the KNMI into two distinct types. In the northern region, specifically Groningen, earthquakes are often induced by human activities such as gas extraction. In contrast, the southern region, including Limburg, experiences natural earthquakes caused by tectonic plate movements and crustal tension.
Data from the KNMI indicates that seismic activity in the Groningen field can persist even after gas extraction has ceased. The institute utilizes seismometers to record movements and encourages residents to report felt tremors to help differentiate between measured seismic data and human experience.
