Health experts warn of vitamin deficiency and supplement risks
Medical experts are highlighting the risks associated with both vitamin deficiencies and the excessive intake of dietary supplements. While many people take vitamins without medical necessity, overconsumption can lead to serious health issues. For instance, excessive Vitamin B12 intake may pose long-term risks, and Vitamin A or D overdoses can lead to increased intracranial pressure or cardiovascular problems.
Vitamin B12 is essential for DNA formation, nerve cell regeneration, and regulating homocysteine levels. A deficiency can lead to cardiovascular disease or permanent nerve damage, though reserves often last months or years. Consequently, supplementation is primarily recommended for those with medically confirmed deficiencies, such as vegans.
Regarding Vitamin D, deficiency is widespread, affecting nearly 60 percent of the German population according to the German Nutrition Society. High-risk groups include the elderly, individuals with darker skin pigmentation, those who spend little time outdoors, and infants. While sun exposure is necessary for Vitamin D production, health authorities advise balancing UV exposure with skin protection to prevent skin cancer.
