Health impacts of chronic stress and sleep deprivation

Prolonged stress and sleep deprivation can lead to significant physical and emotional health consequences. According to the Cleveland Clinic, chronic stress can manifest through less common symptoms, including skin issues like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, hives, and excessive sweating, as well as hair loss. It can also impact reproductive health by causing menstrual irregularities or hormonal imbalances.

Physiologically, stress triggers the brain to activate the fight-or-flight response, increasing heart rate and releasing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. When this state remains active for extended periods, it can disrupt the body's natural equilibrium.

Psychologist Roser Gort emphasizes that sleep is essential for repairing physical structures, the immune system, and emotional regulation. Chronic sleep deficits can impair memory consolidation, increase the risk of physical injuries, and affect cognitive performance. Gort notes that consistent sleep patterns are vital, warning that repeatedly delaying alarms can cause brain confusion.
