Kumamoto earthquake recovery efforts expand through public and private sectors

Various organizations and local governments are implementing relief and recovery measures following the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto earthquake.

In Kyoto, the city has provided extensive support, including dispatching disaster relief nurses, offering free municipal housing to displaced persons, and extending tax filing deadlines for residents of affected areas in Kumamoto. Kyoto has also established donation boxes at city offices and subway stations to benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Private sector initiatives include Hokka Hokka Tei, which is selling a “Kumamoto Support! Kyushu Tasty Bento” through October. For every bento sold, 40 yen will be donated to Kumamoto earthquake relief funds. Additionally, Kitchen Misakimaru in Beppu is providing meals to evacuees from Kumamoto currently staying in Oita Prefecture.

On the business front, the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan (SMRJ) has established a “Recovery Support Advisor System” to provide free expert assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises in Kumamoto. Meanwhile, the city of Iga is hosting a “Yorisoi Festa” on September 6 to raise funds and awareness through local vendor sales and donations.
