Kyushu launches tourism subsidies to support earthquake recovery

To stimulate tourism following the Kumamoto earthquake, a new support initiative titled ‘Kyushu Reconstruction Support Discount’ is set to launch on October 1. The program, supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, offers significant subsidies for travelers in the Kyushu region. Benefits include up to 20,000 yen off per night for accommodations, 30,000 yen off for trips including transportation for two or more nights, and up to 35,000 yen for multi-prefecture tours.

In addition to regional recovery efforts, Japan Travel Co., Ltd. is launching a domestic tourism campaign focused on the Sanyo area, covering Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, and Okayama prefectures through March 2027. This campaign features specialized travel products, including experience-based tours and discounted accommodation sets.

One month after the Kumamoto earthquake, the economic impact remains visible. While some areas like Izumi City have seen a 70% drop in station shop sales due to Kyushu Shinkansen service suspensions, other sectors are seeing unexpected demand. Business hotels near recovery sites have reported occupancy rates rising to 90% due to the influx of medical professionals and construction workers supporting reconstruction efforts.
