KLM and SkyNRG Begin Construction of Netherlands' First Dedicated SAF Plant

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and renewable‑fuel specialist SkyNRG have marked the start of building the Netherlands' first facility devoted exclusively to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The plant, located in Delfzijl, is slated to begin delivering fuel in 2028. Under a long‑term offtake agreement, KLM will purchase at least 75,000 tonnes of SAF each year – roughly 75% of the plant’s output – in a deal valued at nearly €3 billion.

The project is intended to boost SAF availability and cut aviation’s lifecycle CO₂ emissions by 65% to over 90% compared with conventional kerosene. KLM CEO Marjan Rintel said the agreement helps finance and realise the facility, while SkyNRG CEO Maarten van Dijk called the milestone a step toward large‑scale SAF production in the Netherlands.
