Netherlands sustainable aviation fuel rollout

In late July 2026, the European Commission approved two Dutch state‑aid programmes totalling €290 million to accelerate the development and commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The funding targets both advanced bio‑SAF and synthetic e‑SAF, with the aim of producing around 285 kilotonnes of SAF per year and supporting the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal and ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation.

A few days later, in early August 2026, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and renewable‑fuel specialist SkyNRG announced the start of construction on the Netherlands' first dedicated SAF plant in Delfzijl. The facility is scheduled to begin delivering fuel in 2028, with KLM committing to purchase at least 75,000 tonnes annually under a long‑term offtake agreement. The plant is expected to cut aviation lifecycle CO₂ emissions by 65‑90 % compared with conventional kerosene, marking a concrete step toward large‑scale SAF production in the country.
