Low Countries face unsettled weather during autumn transition

The Low Countries are experiencing a transition toward autumn, characterized by unsettled weather patterns across Belgium and the Netherlands. Meteorologists report a period of variable conditions, including heavy rain showers, thunderstorms, and moderate winds.

In the Netherlands, the KNMI has issued warnings for heavy thunderstorms, particularly in North Holland, where significant rainfall and potential localized flooding are expected. Some regions face risks of aquaplaning due to sudden downpours. Despite recent heavy rains, some areas remain concerned about soil saturation; while rain is replenishing surface layers, it has not yet fully addressed deeper groundwater shortages caused by previous summer droughts.

In Belgium, the shift to meteorological autumn brings more frequent Atlantic disturbances, leading to wetter conditions in early September. However, there is potential for a late summer resurgence in the second half of the month, as shifting wind patterns could bring warmer air and temperatures slightly above average. Meteorologist Frank Deboosere notes that such “Indian summers” are common when high-pressure systems settle over the European continent.
