Montenegro EU accession faces uncertainty amid member state requests for analysis

Montenegro's EU accession process is facing uncertainty following reports that several member states have requested a pause for further analysis. According to diplomatic sources, the Netherlands, Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia have expressed the need for additional verification of European standards. Some reports suggest that political tensions following the death of Ratko Mladic have influenced certain member states' stances.

However, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Maida Gorčević has denied any political or technical blockade. She stated that chapters 18 (Statistics) and 19 (Social Policy) are ready for closure, pending only the completion of parliamentary procedures in the Netherlands. Gorčević maintains that the momentum of the European path has not slowed and expects these chapters to close before the next intergovernmental conference, potentially in October.

EU officials have characterized the current situation as largely technical, noting that delays often stem from the time required for member states to complete complex national and parliamentary procedures rather than formal political opposition. Montenegro has currently closed 18 of its 33 negotiating chapters.
