Netherlands coalition considers new Box 3 wealth tax proposal

The Dutch governing coalition is considering a significant shift in its approach to the Box 3 wealth tax. Prime Minister Jetten has indicated that the government intends to present a new proposal to opposition parties, describing it as an “attractive offer” aimed at both the left and right sides of the political spectrum.

Previously, budget proposals had not included a specific plan for Box 3. Reports suggested that a planned capital gains tax—which would have taxed unrealized value increases—was removed from consideration, potentially resulting in a revenue gap of up to €20 billion in the initial years. Additionally, some planned cuts to social security have been adjusted or canceled.

Initial reactions suggest the new direction may appeal more to right-leaning parties. While groups like Pro and Volt remain cautious regarding social security, and JA21 has expressed positivity toward the Box 3 direction, negotiations are expected to continue as the Chamber prepares to debate financial aspects of the budget.
